Praia de Santo Amaro

Everything you need to now about this surf spot

Santo Amaro is the first large beach you’ll find travelling from Lisbon to the west. Santo Amaro is more sheltered than most of the surf spots on this coast line and therefore needs a really big swell to start working. Once the conditions are right, it’s most likely the best wave around.

This long right point break offers multiple barrel sections breaking over a reef plateau on the west side of the beach. It is hollow and powerful all the way. It needs a bit more water to work properly, so your best bet is from mid tide on wards. As a reference, it’s around one meter smaller than Carcavelos with similar conditions. So when Carcavelos is maxed out, you will have lots of fun in Santo Amaro. Only for advanced surfers!

Please note that the best time to surf this stretch of coast is October to March. In the summer there are usually no waves!
