Reef is a powerful, fast and short righthander located on the north side of Praia da Empa, next to another surf spot called Backdoor. Its name derives from the fact that the wave sets off from a shallow reef platform that starts on land and becomes deeper as it stretches out towards the northeast. It’s a wave that can work any time of the year.

The deep water around the reef makes this wave extremely powerful. The sharp and shallow reef plateau can create perfect hollow barrels when the conditions are right, but be prepared to pay the price if you fail. A critical take-off is followed by a tube that ends exactly at the point where the reef platform becomes exposed on the surface. Make sure you kick out in time!

The optimal conditions for this spot are wind from the east (SE-NE) and swell from the northwest. Mid tide is usually the best. It’s one of the most difficult waves in the area when it gets bigger and also popular amongst bodyboarders. For expert surfers only!
